Lately, I've been putting most of my language mind to having fun with Dutch and Esperanto. I looked at my Dutch sentence of the day and thought to myself... Hey, you know how to say that in Esperanto!

(Or at least I THINK I do, hence putting it in the community...)

Do you ever find yourself making habits like this to learn a language? I've found that I can keep my passion for many languages alive when I make little projects like this that force my brain to use more than one foreign language at a time.

Mi skribos plu en esperanto, sed nun mi ne scias multan kaj mi skribas/parlas tre malbone esperanton :(

Notes augmented

We've enhanced and de-bugged Notes. If you haven't tried it yet, now's the time! You can create a private note when you ban multiple users. You can also delete multiple notes at once. Lastly, paid users have the option to add a note (visible only to you) whenever you add or remove a friend (guaranteed to avoid embarrassing social mishaps). If you don't currently have a paid account, you can upgrade now! It only takes a few minutes and costs less than a bad shopping mall haircut (plus, it's way more fashionable)!

Product tweaks and bug kill

1. In another effort to zap spam, comments containing links from domains LiveJournal deems untrustworthy are now automatically screened
2. If you sign up to get notifications of the Writer's Block question of the day, you'll now see the daily question in the email notification, so you'll have a little extra time to ponder before you post. You can subscribe to Writers Block notifications here
3. The issue causing random comments to vanish has been fixed!
4. If you visit a LiveJournal page and get prompted to log in, you'll be returned to the same page after you sign in (Thanks, Dreamwidth)!
5. If you don't edit the timestamp for an entry at all, the entry timestamp will indicate the time the entry was posted instead of the time the Update Journal page was loaded
6. Comments with paddings/backgrounds render correctly within the comment box (and will no longer wrap outside the box and break frames/margins)

New FCK fixes rich text editor!

1. We've updated our RTE (Rich Text Editor) to FCKeditor version 2.6.5
2. When switching from the RTE to HTML editor, links for syndicated feeds are no longer broken
3. RTE now functions properly in Safari 4.0
4. An extra line/space will not be auto-inserted whenever you switch from RTE to HTML editor
5. The insert image link now works correctly in all browsers

A couple of weeks ago, we asked you to send in postcards to surround us with LiveJournal community. Thanks for coming through! We've received postcards all the way from Germany, Finland, and Canada and from all over the US, including Texas, Florida, Alaska, Montana, Wyoming, Indiana, Hawaii, and Oklahoma just to name just a handful. We're thrilled with our improved decor.

Stranga afero pri esperanto estas la fakto ke iu ajn povas havi fortan opinion pri ĝi, ĉu li scias ion pri ĝi ĉu ne. Lingvistoj ne farus tiel pri la latina, sanskrita aŭ hispana, sed multaj el ili ne hezitas fari tiel pri esperanto, konstatas Gunnar Gällmo en sia recenzo pri la verko "In the Land of Invented Languages" de Arika Okrent. Tiurilate la aŭtoro laŭ li estas raraĵo, ĉar ŝi ne estas esperantisto, sed profesia lingvisto, kiu tamen prenas la aferon serioze, kaj faris surlokan esploradon en kunvenoj de esperantistoj kaj klingonistoj antaŭ ol ion konkludi.

Dum la jaroj 1923-1926 Edmond Privat, pinta pioniro de Esperanto, estis vicdelegito de Irano ĉe tiama Ligo de Nacioj. Li uzis sian pozicion por antaŭenigi Esperanton. Laŭ oficialaj dokumentoj de la brita registaro, trovitaj de Hilary Chapman, oni konsideris Iranon "duon-civilizita ŝtato". Tiaj ŝtatoj laŭ la brita vidpunkto povas doni gravajn postenojn al eksterlandanoj pro ties pli granda kompetento, sed ankaŭ pro subaĉeto. Edmond Privat laŭ la samaj britaj dokumentoj estis "maniulo" pri Esperanto, kaj tial misuzis sian pozicion por antaŭenigi lingvon kies progreso neniel rilatis al la interesoj de Irano (tiam nomita Persio).

Toño del Barrio demandas sin, ĉu estas ĝusta strategia elekto proponi al retaj projektoj senpagan tradukon al Esperanto, kiel ofte okazas. Laŭ lia opinio komercaj retejoj donu rekompencon por profesia laboro. Kelkfoje senpaga kunlaboro povas valori la penon pro la utilo kiun ĝi donas al esperantistoj, sed ne ĉiam, li konstatas. "Pri du tre lastatempaj kazoj mi nun akiris klare kontraŭan opinion: ni ne senpage esperantigu la retejojn de grandaj entreprenoj kiel Google, Facebook (en tiuj ĉi kazoj la averto certe alvenas malfrue) aŭ Twitter. Se ili volas nian helpon, ili pagu, diable!" Tamen, ĉu tiam plu ekzistos Google en Esperanto?

The empire strikes back

In recent weeks, we've taken huge steps towards blocking spam accounts on LiveJournal. In fact, we've suspended as many as 30,000 accounts in a single day! We've implemented several pre-emptive measures to prevent the creation of spam accounts, and we've honed our detection of suspicious content. Spam bots are a crafty lot, so we'll continue to refine our tactics and keep up the good fight to keep you safe from spam attacks on LiveJournal.

RSS feeds again

If you're addicted to xkcd_rss, icanhaschzbrgr, or other syndicated feeds, we're pleased to report that we've resolved the update error that was mucking up your RSS feeds. While content was being pulled correctly, it wasn't being posted to the feeds themselves. Late last week, we finally nailed down what we hope was the root problem, so content should post properly. We thank you for your patience.

Proksimiĝas al sia fino la validoperiodo de la strategia laborplano de UEA por la jaroj 2001-2010, bazita sur la mantro de Renato Corsetti: "informado, instruado, utiligado". Sub gvido de prezidanto Probal Dasgupta estis komencita la laboro por formuli novan planon. En la komitata diskutejo jam leviĝis kritikaj voĉoj, laŭ kiuj la prezentita skizo de nova strategia laborplano estas malklara kaj ne facile komprenebla. Aparte mirigis multajn la malapero de la konkretaj "agad-direktoj", kiujn enhavas la nuna plano.

En la 1970-aj kaj 1980-aj jaroj funkciis tre aktiva laborgrupo de UEA ĉe la ĉefsidejo de Unuiĝintaj Nacioj en Novjorko. Inter la pintaj agantoj tiam estis Humphrey Tonkin. Nun sub lia gvido estas starigata nova laborgrupo, kiu jam faris siajn unuajn paŝojn. Humphrey Tonkin volas ne nur pli intense informi Unuiĝintajn Naciojn pri Esperanto, sed ankaŭ pliigi la informadon al esperantistoj pri la laboro de Unuiĝintaj Nacioj. Probal Dasgupto bonvenigas la iniciaton: "Por ke oni restu ano de la monda organizaĵara parlamento, oni devas laŭtaŭge ofte aŭdigi sin, sed ankaŭ aŭskulti la aliajn."

Nova katastrofo por la esperanta kulturo. Pro la fermo de la gastiga servilo Geocities, la grava retejo "Himnaro Cigneta" malaperis.

Когда-то Державин в вольном переводе из Горация, мечтал: «Слух пройдет обо мне от Белых вод до Чёрных...» (Как было в оригинале – искать лень). Вслед за ним – Пушкин: «Слух обо мне пройдёт по всей Руси великой»... И у других поэтов такое встречается... Я, конечно, не Пушкин (хотя мои переводы из него знающие люди считают адеватными), зато у меня есть мощное средство международного общения...
И вот недавно слух обо мне дошёл аж до Бразилии. Aender dos Santos перевёл несколько моих стихотворений с эсперанто на бразильско-португальский (язык довольно сильно отличающийся от европейского португальского). Приятно... Конечно, мне трудно оценить перевод, не зная языка. Похожих слов достаточно много, рифмы видны, ритм есть, хотя и изменился – строчки стали длиннее. Надеюсь, смысл и настроение переданы – ну, я сам перевожу только те стихи, которые меня «зацепили»...

Ĉiu poeto revas, ke oni vaste aŭdu lian nomon kaj sciu liajn verkojn. Pri tio skribis Horacio antaŭ iom pli ol 2000 jaroj en sia odo “Exegi monumentum...”, lanĉinte tradiciojn de specifa ĝenro, kiun poste sekvis ankaŭ Gavriil Derĵavin, Aleksandr Puŝkin kaj aliaj rusaj poetoj.
Mi ne estas Horaco, nek Puŝkin (kvankam miajn tradukojn el li kompetentuloj aprezas kaj laŭdas), tamen mi havas la potencajn komunikrimedojn: Esperanton kaj interreton...
Antaŭnelonge mia famo atingis eĉ Sud-Amerikon. Aender dos Santos tradukis kelkajn miajn poemojn el Esperanto al la brazil-portugala lingvo (ĝi grave diferencas disde la eŭropa portugala). Vere agrablas... Certe, malfacilas taksi la tradukon, ne regante ties lingvon. Troveblas pluraj similaj vortoj, videblas rimoj, la ritmo ĉeestas, kvankam ŝanĝiĝis – la verslinioj estas pli longaj. Espereble, la senco kaj etoso estas transdonitaj fidele – nu, mi mem tradukas nur tiujn poemojn, kiuj “kaptis” min...
